Use Models to Multiply Tens and Ones

Essential Question How can you use base-ten blocks and area models to model multiplication with a 2-digit factor?

UNLOCK the Problem

Three groups of 14 students toured the state capitol in Columbus, Ohio. How many students toured the capitol in all?

Multiply. 3 x 14 = \(\blacksquare\)

One Way

  • Question 1 (request help)

    STEP 1
    Model 3 x 14 with base-ten blocks

    STEP 2                                                                      STEP 3
Multiply the tens and ones.                                         Add the products.
    Record each product.                                                  30 + 12 = 42

                                                                                     3 x 14 = 42

So, 42 students toured the capitol.

  • 3 x 10 =
    3 x 4 =

Another Way

  • Question 2 (request help)

    STEP 1
Model 3 x 14 with an area model.

    STEP 2                                                                             STEP 3
Multiply the tens.            Multiply the ones.                         Add the products.

                                                                                            30 + 12 = 42

                                                                                            3 x 14 = 42

  • 3 x 10 =
    3 x 4 =
