Problem Solving

Sense or Nonsense?

  • Question 13 (request help)

Emilio and Julia used different ways to find \(\frac{1}{2}\div4\). Emilio used a model to find the quotient. Julia used a related multiplication equation to find the quotient. Whose answer makes sense? Whose answer is nonsense? Explain your reasoning.

    Emilio’s Work

    Julia’s Work

    \(\cfrac{1}{2}\div4\)

    If \(\frac{1}{2}\div4=\blacksquare\), then \(\blacksquare\times4=\frac{1}{2}\)

    I know that \(\frac{1}{8}\div4=\frac{1}{2}\)

    So, \(\frac{1}{2}\div4=\frac{1}{8}\) because \(\frac{1}{8}\times4=\frac{1}{2}\)
